Tonio Schembri

NOAH Director of International Business

Tonio Schembri brings the same level of dedication and attention to detail to NOAH’s international operations as he did to Judo, where as a member of the Maltese National Team he competed in international competitions.

Tonio is a highly seasoned businessman who has developed business relationships and enterprises internationally, including in Europe, United States, North Africa, and Turkey. He has been instrumental in establishing international strategic partnerships that helped secure both private and public funding for projects in the waste, water, and energy sectors.
Tonio’s extensive international travels and diverse professional experience makes him an ideal person for developing new business relationships and opportunities across nations and cultures.
As a Maltese native who grew up on the wonderous but water scarce archipelago in the Mediterranean Sea, Tonio learned the extreme importance of water at a very young age. He has witnessed the increasingly dry climate that Malta has experienced with climate change, and has seen the stresses on Malta’s limited natural water resources increase as their population and economy grew. This gives him a unique perspective into the water insecurity that is impacting larger parts of the world, and the vital importance for better water management.

Tonio is at Wied iz-Zurrieq, a small village on Malta’s southern coast, which is popular with tourists for its beautiful Blue Grotto caves and with scuba divers who explore a scuttled Libyan oil tanker. In the background is the Maltese island Filfla which is populated by one of the world’s largest European Storm Petrel colonies. Perhaps the largest ever recorded Great White shark, known as MALTA, was caught in its waters in 1987. Tonio is amazed that this majestic shark once lived and swam in the very same Mediterranean Sea waters now used to provide a large portion of Malta’s water supply, showing just how vital this resource is to both people and animals large and small.
